Supported by a prestigious DAAD scholarship, I embarked on an educational exchange journey that granted me the remarkable opportunity to leave Tanzania and pursue a PhD in Mathematics at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. This life-changing experience has had a profound impact on both my academic and personal growth, inspiring me to share my story and provide advice to fellow scholars who may be embarking on a similar path.
The decision to pursue a PhD abroad was not one I took lightly. It required careful consideration, extensive research, and countless hours of preparation. However, the moment I received news of my acceptance and the scholarship, a surge of excitement and gratitude enveloped me. I knew this was an extraordinary chance to expand my knowledge, delve into groundbreaking research, and connect with a global community of scholars.
As intriguing as this experience may be, it was not without its fair share of challenges. I have vivid memories of the preparations I made for my relocation to South Africa, and one of the most significant hurdles I faced was leaving behind my beloved family, particularly my husband and daughter. It was an undeniably heartfelt and emotional experience, but I held steadfast in my belief that this should not deter me from seizing the opportunity to pursue my studies. I understood that by pursuing my educational goals, I would not only benefit personally but also contribute to a brighter future for my family. The unwavering support from my husband and other family members provided me with an incredible boost of energy and encouragement. With this perspective, I could envision a future where the temporary distance would be outweighed by the long-term benefits and personal growth that my studies would bring.
In addition to the challenges of leaving my family, my journey to South Africa also involved navigating the intricacies of visa applications and arranging essential travel logistics. As a first-time traveler to the country, I initially felt overwhelmed by the daunting procedures involved. However, contrary to what I had heard from others about the complexities of moving to another country, I soon realized that it was not as challenging as I had anticipated.
With math teachers encourage support and the creation of a non-judgmental learning environment that brings a sense of safety to their students. They can create curiosity and eagerness to learn by providing mathematical skill-advancing board games, puzzles, or friendly class competitions. For example, instead of droning on about the theory of probability and percentiles, rather start a friendly gamble with a game of ‘What are the odds,’ a version of truth or dare.
This outlook is what makes Pi Day such an ideal model for math appreciation; Pi Day is a day off from usual routine school work, where kids bring along round-shaped foods to school to examine and discuss fractions, area and volume, all while enjoying their special snack. Children should be afforded this playful freedom to practice their skills, as these are, in fact, essential daily life skill. Humans use math all the time, from Children to Elders, from cooking or calculating the right angle to approach a parking spot, to playing an online quiz to get you and your significant others percentage compatibility or sharing a snack into two completely even halves.
“Mathematics for everyone” is not just a slogan, it is a subject equally interesting and foundational to life as we know it. Math is not just there for scientific and technological advancements; therefore, everyone should have an equal opportunity to study it, regardless of social, economic, or cultural background.
When I reflect on my research journey, I’m filled with delight and a sense of satisfaction. I see a more self-assured and robust person because of the challenges encountered, knowledge acquired, and relationships built. Initially, I faced a significant challenge in my studies due to my limited background in certain areas of my research. I vividly remember moments when I would attend meetings, talks, or seminars and was completely lost. However, I approached this obstacle with determination and a strong desire to learn. I invested a substantial amount of time and effort into building the necessary foundations for my research. This involved extensive reading and seeking guidance from my supervisor and fellow students. I received invaluable support from my supervisor, who worked closely with me and was always available to help. Additionally, engaging in productive discussions with my peers and other researchers in the mathematics department proved to be immensely beneficial. As I delved deeper into my research, I encountered complex concepts and advanced techniques. Overcoming these challenges required perseverance and a growth mindset. I dedicated countless hours to studying advanced textbooks and reviewing research papers. This has not only improved my understanding but also honed my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Despite the initial difficulties, my continuous learning and progress yielded remarkable results. I grew more confident in my research abilities, developing innovative approaches and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in my field.
An integral part of this journey has been the exposure to diverse perspectives and cultures. Interacting with scholars from around the world has broadened my understanding, engaging in cultural exchange activities like the international food day, where I savored diverse cuisines, to celebrating our shared love for knowledge, I have fostered an inclusive and vibrant academic community that transcends boundaries. Beyond the academic and cultural experiences, I am profoundly grateful for the personal growth I have undergone. Living in a foreign country has taught me invaluable life skills such as adaptability, open-mindedness, and embracing uncertainty. Navigating unfamiliar situations, embracing new challenges, and stepping out of my comfort zone have become second nature.
The educational exchange has been a transforming one for me. The opportunity to pursue advanced studies in a different country has opened doors to unparalleled intellectual growth, cultural enrichment, and personal development. I am eternally grateful for the support and opportunities I have received.
